The origins of glass making in Venice are said to date back to the 9th century , in the 13th century to protect the city of Venice from fire risk fearing the then mostly wooden buildings would be destroyed, the glass furnaces were all moved to Murano. Its governments at that time placed many restrictions on employees to protect the glass blowers methods. This in part, due to the close competition in different glass makers, led to the development of the high quality exquisite glass we know today.
Fused glass is made by building up glass in layers , often starting with a base of coloured glass, then gold or silver and other smaller pieces of glass are layered on top, before a final layer of clear glass. Some times millefiori, meaning a thousand flowers are used in the designs as well as Avventurina (copper crystals) to create dazzling designs. Once the fusing process has taken place in the furnace the glass is cut or finished and polished
Our fused glass is made by layering murano glass, often starting with clear cristallo glass on the base then the design is encased in the centre using individually hand cut coloured Murano glass, with Avventurina crystals, dichroic glass or gold and silver powders, finishing with another layer of clear glass on top of the design. These are then fired at around 795 degrees fully fusing together, resulting in beautiful jewel like pieces.
Using various other kiln based methods we can create tack fused and slumped work resulting in unique pieces of jewellery or glass art.
Each individual piece of our work is uniquely designed and produced.
